My running career is not a great one. I was on track for a year in 8th grade and I was battling a messed up ankle that left me to sit out of most of the races. I attempt to run by myself with no real goal a lot, that doesn't always work, but last year I had the goal of running the Atlanta Half-Marathon on Thanksgiving morning. Unfortunately, due to various set backs like being sick for three weeks straight one month and not being able to train properly, I was not able to run the race. But have no fear! With the help of Matt's amazing mother, I have officially signed up for the Army 10-miler in D.C. on October 12th and I am more than excited!
So to get ready for the race, I have been getting back into running after a long semester of excuses as to why I couldn't run (the gym was too far away, it was too cold, I hated running on my campus, etc...). My mother bought me a beautiful new pair of running shoes as my way belated birthday present and I added some new gear to my closet as a treat to myself (or motivation, as I like to call it).
I'm currently using a training program that Matthew's father wrote for me during dinner one night. The guy knows just what runners need, it's amazing really. It combines shorter 3 and 4 mile runs and long runs with hills and cross training. The mileage doesn't increase a significant amount so I am able to stay healthy and *cross your fingers* stay injury free. I can't wait to get out there and run my first official race!
