An apple a day...

The first time I decided I wanted to be a teacher I was 5 years old and my parents had just bought me an awesome easel for Christmas. One side was a chalkboard and one side was a whiteboard. I promptly sat my baby brother and my American Girl Dolls in the living room and taught a lesson about how to draw some kind of scribble. Or something along those lines.

Flash forward thirteen years and for some reason I decided to become a secondary education major with a focus in history. Then I figured out how many history papers I'd have to write during my college career and that didn't sound too appealing. Plus, it takes a really special kind of person to teach high school, and I am definitely not that person. So my journey to become an elementary school teacher began then.

Now that I'm finishing my first month of my student teaching a few things have made me realize how much I just can't wait to be on my own and have my own classroom. In just a short month I've seen these babies grow both academically and mentally, and I am devastated to leave them. I keep thinking of things that sound mundane but I'm so excited to do, like make school supply lists and lesson plans. I even joked today about how I wish I could put "master copier and laminater" on my resume because I really do enjoy those kinds of things, in a weird way.

But it's more than just tasks like that. I can't wait to have my own class of beautiful children that I will get to see grow and learn from not only what I can teach them, but from each other. I love to see the different personalities that develop and how they interact with one another. The early mornings aren't fun at all and some days my bed seems more comfy than a cold classroom will be, but it's always worth it when I get to hear, "Good morning Ms. Stanley!" and see their beautiful smiles. Not to mention, how awesome it is when they finally get a hard concept we've been talking about, and I see their little light bulbs turn on!
